SAYVILLE’S VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS HELP THEIR NEIGHBORS ACROSS THE BAY
By Firefighter Wendy Liu
June 23, 2009
During the late evening on May 20, Sayville's volunteer firefighters were called to respond to the scene of home burning at the Fire Island Pines. As they have done many times before, firefighters geared up and rode on two engines to the Sayville Ferry terminal in Sayville to help their neighbors across the Great South Bay. They quickly began unloading their equipment, which consisted of everything from hoses and saws to extra air bottles. Firefighters from Sayville and Bayport filed onto the ferry as they were both called in to assist the Fire Island Pines Fire Department.
As the ferry left the dock, Bayport and Sayville began to plan their response. They knew that a few houses were on fire and that they would have to help suppress those fires and protect adjacent structures. The tiny glow of the fire as the ferry left Sayville grew bigger as the ferry neared the Pines. As the ferry arrived at the dock, firefighters grabbed their equipment and quickly made their way down dark walkways to the scene of the house fires. Upon their arrival, they found two houses that had already collapsed into huge piles of burning rubble.
Along with firefighters from the Pines and several other departments from both sides of the Great South Bay, Sayville's firefighters helped put out the fire and helped keep the fire from spreading to adjacent properties. Three hours after Sayville's initial response, their volunteer firefighters boarded the ferry that took them back across the bay. They returned to their respective stations after 2AM. This alarm was only one of the many instances where well-trained and dedicated volunteer firefighters of Sayville are called in to aid their neighboring communities.
