SFD Members playing Hot and Cold at Schwachman-Diamond Dash For A Cure
By Firefighter Wendy Liu
August 28, 2009
At the Sixth Annual Schwachman-Diamond Dash For a Cure, Sayville FD volunteers took some time out of their weekend to participate in the event. They brought their fire safety house and taught fire safety to both adults and children. Members also brought a pumper, which was used to cool off the runners at the finish line. Fire Department volunteers provided traffic control and road blocking along the route to keep runners safe. And, of course, a some members also ran in the event.
Dylan Kolar, a beautiful 8 year old boy from Sayville, suffers from Schwachman-Diamond Syndrome. The purpose of this event was to raise money for research for Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome as well as other Inherited Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes and Pancreatic Insufficiency Conditions
Fire Safety Instructor Ex-Captain Bob Smith looks on as children prepare to exit the “bedroom” of the Safety House as the simulated smoke enters the room.
