CROWDS LINE THE STREETS OF SAYVILLE FOR THE ISLIP TOWN VOLUNTEER FIREMAN’S PARADE
By Firefighter Wendy Liu
August 28, 2009
On Saturday, August 8, 2009, the Sayville Fire Department hosted the Islip Town Volunteer Fireman's Parade, which was also sponsored by the Town of Islip. Volunteer members of the Department stepped up to host the parade, which was an eight-month long project. They wanted to show the community their pride in the volunteer fire service as well as use the opportunity to showcase their hometown of Sayville.
Main Street was packed with people of all ages as they were treated to over 800 handsomely dressed marchers, colorful and lively bands as well as dozens of fire trucks. Members of the volunteer departments and ambulance companies who paraded down Main Street were treated to the hometown feel Sayville is known for and a warm welcome from all of the parade-goers.
For those who came back to Sayville Fire Department Headquarters after the parade, there were carnival rides and games, food, drinks and DJ music. Later in the evening, dozens of trophies were awarded to fire and ambulance companies as well as bands.
Sayville Fire Department Chief Lawrence Sesso would like to thank the community for their support and Suffolk County Police and fire departments who helped with road closures. In addition, he would like to thank Lindenhurst Fire Department for covering the Sayville Fire District during that evening.
